As a result, gig workers are often classified as independent contractors and fall outside many workplace protections. This creates a growing gap in the economic safety net. As more Gen Z workers participate in gig work, policymakers face the challenge of modernizing labor policies to protect workers while maintaining flexibility in the labor market.

This brief has been produced as a result of YIP’s partnership with the Habla Future’s Initiative- a platform that expands access and spreads awareness about the benefits of bilingualism through research, legislation, and advocacy. Founded on the belief that language comfort drives success, the Habla Futures Initiative has thus far successfully drafted and passed a countywide resolution to support bilingual education and is currently finalizing a draft bill to expand bilingual teacher pipelines with a California Senator. Through this work, YIP has partnered with California Association of Bilingual Education (CABE), the University of California Irvine School of Education (UCI), and nonprofit bilingual arts programs, Habla Arte and The Lit League.
