The Exception to Exceptional Universities

National Policy

In this piece, I argue that UC Berkeley’s political polarization was worse than I expected when I first started there, and that the ideological homogeneity poses dangers to the young people who are supposed to be preparing to enter the diverse political sphere. My article weaves together my own thoughts and worries about the political atmosphere of UC Berkeley, experts’ explanations of the danger of political polarization in education, and steps universities can take to solve this issue. Ultimately, I want to remind readers that civil disagreement is essential to democracy and even society as a whole and work needs to be done to bolster it, starting at universities like UC Berkeley.
