The United States faces a growing fiscal challenge as the national debt approaches $38 trillion, while current revenue sources are insufficient to sustain major programs like Social Security and Medicare. Proposals to eliminate taxes on tips, overtime, or Social Security may be politically popular but would worsen long-term deficits and accelerate the government’s fiscal imbalance. To address this challenge, Congress should strengthen existing revenue sources, such as modernizing the federal estate tax, to ensure that large accumulations of wealth that currently escape taxation contribute to the federal tax base.
