The state has never asked for your permission. It was there before you were born, it will be there after you die, and in between it will tax you, conscript you, imprison you if you disobey, and call all of this legitimate. That word — legitimate — is doing an enormous amount of work. Strip it away, and what remains is an institution that compels obedience through force and calls it duty. Philosophical anarchists have noticed this contradiction, and they want you to notice it too.
