Freedom and Fairness of the 2024 Bangladeshi Parliamentary Election

In early January, increasingly autocratic leader Sheikh Hasina of the Awami League won her fifth term in office as Prime Minister. For months preceding the election, violence and protests broke out as a result of controversy surrounding Hasina’s rule. These protests were repressed as Hasina became notorious for cracking down on free speech. The main opposition party, Bangladesh National Party (BNP) declined to participate in the election, calling for an interim caretaker government, which Hasina refused. Her victory was highly controversial among BNP members and has been recognized as an unfree and unfair election by several countries.

Singapore is my homeland, an island-state borne from the political turmoils of the 20th century — colonialism and communism. The prosperity enjoyed by Singaporeans is a product of economic prosperity and political stability. This is fascinating to many, given Singapore’s adoption of a free-market model yet with government-linked-corporations, or its unitary dominant-party nature. Nevertheless, any nuanced insight and academic scholarship on Singapore recognises the tradeoffs that have come with this success. In order to build a more prosperous society, where prosperity goes beyond material success to include economic well-being, issues from social, political and economic realms need to be addressed. This essay will examine the issues of freedom of speech, economic inequality and education, highlighting certain areas of concern and propose solutions. The issues were selected for their relevance and their nature in spanning across fields.

Corruption continues to plague South Africa in all aspects of society. It is important that it does not get to the point where it is accepted nor normalized as seen in new democracies such as in Latin America (William Gumede, 2017) . Nepotism and favoritism account for 13% of corruption in the country (Luke Fraser, 2023). Transparency in the procurement of tenders and job vacancies is more paramount than ever. This will allow the general public to check whether the skills of an applicant match the job description at hand. Whistleblowers need to be better protected through policy and improving the witness protection program. Lastly, lifestyle audits need to take place regularly for members of parliament. Our commitment to tackling problems effectively in public health, education, and politics will surely lead us to a prosperous and peaceful nation for all South Africans. It will be challenging. However, if we all contribute to improving this country, we will surely reap the benefits.
